Pilots in cockpit instrument

Instrument Rating (IR)

The Instrument Rating (IR) Course is designed for licensed pilots who wish to enhance their skills and fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). This training equips pilots with the ability to operate an aircraft safely in low-visibility and adverse weather conditions using cockpit instruments and navigation systems.

The program combines ground school instruction with simulator and flight training, covering the essential knowledge and practical competencies required for instrument flying, ensuring pilots develop precision, situational awareness, and strong procedural discipline throughout the course.

Upon completion, graduates will obtain a DGCA-issued Instrument Rating, enabling them to operate flights in a wider range of weather conditions and further advancing their qualifications toward the Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL). The program runs for approximately two (2) months, depending on student performance, weather conditions, and regulatory processing.

The training phases of the IR are as follows:

PhaseDurations
GroundFlight Training
Instrument Rating (IR)50 hours24 hours
Flight Simulator16 hours
Checkride–1 hours
TOTAL50 hours41 flight hours

Note: Training duration may vary depending on weather, DGCA document processing, and trainee progress/performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to your most pressing questions about the Instrument Rating (IR)

An Instrument Rating (IR) is an advanced pilot qualification permitting flight under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) without visual ground reference. Civil aviation law legally mandates it for all scheduled airline flights because commercial carriers operate in controlled airspace and low-visibility conditions regardless of weather. Without an IR, a CPL holder cannot legally command an airliner or execute precision instrument approaches.

The Instrument Rating curriculum teaches pilots to overcome sensory illusions and maintain total aircraft control when visual cues outside the cockpit are completely obscured. Cadets learn to execute an instrument scan, interpreting attitude, airspeed, and altitude indicators to track precision landing beams down to runway decision heights. By repeatedly mastering adverse weather scenarios in both the simulator and actual aircraft, pilots build calm confidence in severe Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC)

AAG Indonesia’s Instrument Rating is completed over an intensive 2-3 month timeline. Cadets begin the navigation module in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator, mastering ILS approaches, VOR tracking, and emergency procedures in a high-repetition environment. Once procedural proficiency is perfected in the simulator, cadets transition to the Cessna 172 to execute live instrument approaches in controlled airspace wearing a view-limiting device. This synergistic split maximizes learning efficiency while maintaining flight standards

To enroll in the Instrument Rating course, pilots must hold a valid DGCA Private Pilot License (PPL) or Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with verified logbook records. Under DGCA CASR Part 61 regulations, candidates must have logged at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot-in-command before completing their rating checkride. Applicants must also hold an DGCA Class 1 Medical Certificate from Balai Hatpen Kemayoran and present proof of English proficiency.

To become an AAG Indonesia cadet, you must meet the requirements. Compile your application dossier, and pass the selection process including psychological profiling, math/physics assessments, an aptitude test, and an interview.
